Ol’ Fashioned

What’s the Story?

You may notice a distinct lack of Whisky/Whiskey within these hallowed pages…This is simply because a) I never have any in the house and b) I neither like nor drink it hence why it’s never in the house! (Sorry. Not Sorry)
However, I do appreciate that some cocktail connoisseurs may be massively judging me right about now (I have Fernet, give me a break!) therefore here’s a super complicated and totally not show-offy version of an Old Fashioned in an ice sphere. Originally made by the guys at The Aviary in Chicago – Here’s the link to their youtube vid… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qqCfFfrhhs

  • 50ml Bourbon
  • 1 cube demerara Sugar
  • Angostura Bitters
  • Mineral Water

Ice Ball Mould, 50ml Jigger, Barspoon, Mixing Glass, Syringe

  1. Using an Ice Ball Mould (if you have one otherwise a water balloon can work as well) fill with mineral water and leave in the freezer for 2-3 hours, until the outside has set but there is still liquid in the centre.
  2. Using a syringe carefully extract the water from the centre of the ice ball (this is easiest to do while it is still in the mould) and place back in the freezer.
  3. At this point you should also put your serving glass in the freezer to cool down.
  4. In a mixing glass add the sugar cube and soak it with the bitters. Using the flat end of a barspoon crush the sugar cube until it is broken up.
  5. Add 10ml of Bourbon and 2 cubes of ice and stir until the ice had melted down by half. Then add 10ml Bourbon to one cube of ice and repeat until all the bourbon is used and the drink is chilled.
  6. Take the Ice ball out of its mould and insert it carefully into the glass.
  7. Using the Syringe extract the Old Fashioned and inject it into the Ice ball through the hole you made earlier.
  8. Garnish with a Lemon spiral and serve.
